I am currently a PhD candidate and Fulbright Fellow completing my dissertation at the Department of Global Gender and Sexuality Studies at University at Buffalo, SUNY. I work primarily on South Asian folklore and transnational women's movements. I have previously worked as a teacher at the undergraduate level and as a human rights journalist for eleven years at various print and electronic media outlets in Pakistan.
I am currently a PhD candidate (ABD status) at the University at Buffalo, SUNY Global Gender Studies Department on a Fulbright Fellowship. I am working to finish my dissertation defense by December 2022. My work focuses on Women's Movements in South Asia and South Asian Folklore and is titled "Finding Jugni: A Sufi-Folk Mapping of ‘Mera Jism, Meri Marzi’ for Pakistan’s Aurat Marches'.
I contribute blogs for DAWN.com and occasionally cover events for the main newspaper in Lahore. I mostly write on human rights issues, culture, and gender.
I was a Teaching Fellow in the Humanities and Social Sciences Department and taught core courses in Writing and Communication and four elective courses - a Gender Studies course titled ‘The Reluctant Feminist’; ‘Media Writing’, ‘Living Theory’ and ‘Master Narratives – Minding the Media Gaps’. I also conducted workshops at LUMS on gender issues.
I was the features editor for the online literary publication and helped edit, outline, and design content and themes for each issue.
I conducted month long Sexual Harassment training workshops with Coca Cola employees from across Pakistan.
Worked as a short-term Senior Qualitative Research Analyst on the organization’s media projects that involve extensive research on identifying political armed violence master narratives in the Pakistani Media Industry.
Two-week consultancy report on identifying Master Narratives of conservative religious groups in Pakistan.
I worked as a sub-editor and was in-charge of the district pages for Southern Punjab. I occasionally contributed features, columns, and op-ed pieces for the newspaper.
I worked as an Associate Editor for the Interviews section, where I helped plan, organize, and conduct interviews with leading authors and public figures for the student publication.
I worked as an Associate Creative Manager for the National Pakistani television channel. I primarily designed concepts for human-interest programming and infotainment shows. I also sat in on post-production and editing sessions and occasionally collaborated with the news division.
I primarily worked as the assistant editor for the Opinion / Editorial pages. I also edited articles for the national desk and wrote features, reviews and did some reporting for the Lahore City pages.
I worked for seven months at the Interflow advertising agency. I was part of the creative team assigned for concepts and slogan writing, as well as an English Copywriter. I worked on brands such as Coca Cola, Nestle and Nestle Corporate.
I co-hosted a breakfast radio show discussing book reviews, analyzing different authors and genres.
I interned at Hum TV, working with Mrs Moneeza Hashmi in programming and coordinating the launch of the channel’s first Lahore-based transmissions. (Programs: Humaara Ghar, Aangan, Shaukeen).
I interned at the largest print publication in Pakistan, where I worked in the editing, magazine, feature writing and reporting sections. I worked as a crime reporting intern on three murder cases and one rape case during this time.
I worked with the Islamabad-based NGO, in cooperation with Asianics Agro Development to promote the rights of women and children in rural areas of Southern Punjab by helping build women’s shelters for rape survivors, burn victims, and runaways.

* November 5, 2012 – UNESCO, Member of the National Consultative Meeting on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity in Islamabad. Signatory to Islamabad Declaration to be presented at the UNESCO conference in Vienna on November 22, 2012.
* December 2011 - Was selected in 2011 for the Alfred Friendly Press Fellowship as a Daniel Pearl Fellow to work at The New York Times, however I was unable to attend the program due to personal commitments.
* December 2011- Attended a 2-week fellowship on social media networking in Copenhagen, Denmark for Pakistani journalists arranged by the Danish Foreign Ministry.
* June, 2005 - Worked as a part of a group of four in re-designing PEMRA (Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority) regulations regarding television program content.
* May- June, 2004 - Journalist exchange program / Award between Kinnaird College and Lady Shri Ram College in Delhi, for 3 weeks, focusing on peace building between Pakistan and India.
* May, 2004 - WISCOMP workshop in India, on conflict resolution, dialogue and peace building between India-Pakistan on Kashmir and other matters of discord.
Volunteer Work:
2010 – Worked with several Darul-Aman’s in Lahore and Southern Punjab with regards to providing women skills training, legal aid and vocational assistance. Work counseling rape and acid victims in Southern Punjab districts.
2005- I volunteered in Azad Kashmir during the 2005 earthquake helping to arrange adoptions for orphaned children with the S.O.S Village foundation.
2004- Designed, recorded and wrote the script for a national social awareness campaign for radio, regarding the plight of Thallassaemia- Major patients in Punjab.
