• Senior consultant is responsible for organizing, monitoring, and maintaining clinical services provided within department in order to achieve highest possible level of patient care with optimum utilization of available resources. Senior consultants are role models of physician leadership and management as well as application of medical expertise in exemplary care of patients.
• Assessed to be proficient in comprehensive clinical management of critically ill patients as leader of multidisciplinary team.
• Critically ill patients include patients with life-threatening single and multiple organ system failure, those at risk of clinical deterioration as well as those requiring resuscitation and/or management in intensive care unit or a high dependency unit.
  
• Recognize and manage disturbances associated with severe medical, surgical, obstetric and pediatric illness and to diagnose and treat-conditions that cause them. This usually involves invasive and non-invasive diagnostic techniques, monitoring, and treatment modalities designed to support vital organs.
• Diagnosis of brain death, and care and support of organ donor.
• Involved in management of deteriorating and seriously ill patients outside intensive care unit as well as transport and retrieval of critically ill patients.
• Communication skills that enable appropriate and effective interaction with patients, families, other team members and referring clinicians, and that enable collaborative, multidisciplinary practice.

• Investigating and diagnosing sick and injured patients on their ailments and then arranging appropriate treatments.
• Updating and maintaining accurate patient records
• Advising patients on health education matters.
• Learning about medical history of a patient to ensure they have no allergies etc.
• If necessary referring patients to hospitals or specialist clinics for further investigation.
• Prescribing medical prescriptions to patients.
• Examining patients physically and doing so taking cultural and social sensitivities into consideration.

• Critical care physicians extensively monitor a patient’s condition by performing a review of systems (ROS).
• Involves checking their neurological, cardiac, respiratory, digestive and urinary functions to make sure they are all responding appropriately.
• If not, physicians will order special medical equipment, such as ventilators, catheters and feeding tubes and prescribe certain medications to help stabilize patient.
• Critical care physicians order and interpret laboratory and diagnostic tests, such complete blood counts (cbc), metabolic profiles, echocardiograms, electrocardiograms (ekgs), mris, ct scans and x-rays.
• Also record medical histories, review of system findings and progress notes into patient’s chart, counsel patient’s family on how their loved one is progressing and instruct critical care staff, such as nurses or physicians assistants, on any new therapies or medications being prescribed.
