Arqum Ishaq Choudry

Currently I am working as a Fellow of College of Physicians and Surgeons (FCPS) in Orthopedic Surgery. My job here is residential and full time. I am doing my General Surgery rotation at present.
My responsibilities as a resident surgeon in this hospital is to manage all sorts of patients presenting in the Surgical Emergency and Trauma Centre along with managing outdoor surgical patients and performing and/or assisting in both elective and emergency surgical cases like

• Appendectomy
• Cholecystectomy
• Hernia repair
• Laparotomy

I am working in the supervision of well-experienced consultant general surgeons.

• Improved patient outcomes by implementing evidence-based medical practices and protocols.
• Developed comprehensive treatment plans for patients with chronic conditions, promoting overall health and wellbeing.
• Enhanced patient satisfaction with thorough assessments, diagnoses, and treatment plans.
• Reduced hospital readmission rates through effective discharge planning and follow-up care.
• Collaborated with interdisciplinary teams to optimize patient care and streamline communication.

It is a 150-bed busy hospital in the centre of the city. I performed my duties in Emergency Medicine, surgical ward and medical ward under the supervision of senior medical specialists, cardiologists, pediatricians and general surgeons.
I polished my medical skills during my tenure in this hospital and was able to manage and treat patients independently and also seek help from my seniors where needed ; and refer the patients to cencerned departments.
I was also given best-performing medical officer award for my services in this hospital.

During my General Medicine rotation, I got the opportunity to learn following :

• Outdoor patient management for cases like hypertension, diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia and infectious diseases ; along with the follow-up care of these patients
• Indoor patient management for cases like chronic liver disease, liver cirrhosis, chronic kidney disease, hypertensive urgency and emergency, diabetic ketoacidosis, ischemic and hemorrhagic CVA
• Performing minor medical procedures like passing nasogastric tube, passing folley's catheter, performing pleuritic and ascitic tap
• Interpreting ECG and referring patients timely to cardiology department
• Performing CPR according to American Heart Association guidelines in the Emergency Department
  I also did 15-day rotation in Liver Clinic and managed cases of viral hepatitis

During my pediatric rotation I was assigned to attend outpatient, inpatient and emergency patients including neonates in nursery. I had the opportunity to learn the following :

• Neonatal and pediatric resuscitation including performing CPR
• Management of emergency cases including aspiration of foreign body, asthma exacerbation, children with seizures, severe acute malnutrition with dehydration and others
• Attending and accessing APGAR score of newborns and managing accordingly
• Plotting the growth of children on growth chart and managing accordingly

During my General Surgery rotation I had my expertise in the following :

• Management of minor surgical cases in Emergency Department including performing primary survey and providing first aid to trauma patients
• Assessment of multiple major surgical cases
• Assisting in major surgeries including laparotomy, hernioplasty, cholecystectomy, appendectomy, mastectomy and thyroidectomy
• Conservative management of surgical patients
• Post operative management of patients
• Chest intubation in emergency cases like Pneumothorax, Hemothorax
• Performing trucut biopsy ; excision of sebaceous cyst, lipoma and ganglion

• Enhanced patient safety by closely monitoring anesthesia delivery and patient vital signs during procedures.
• Assisted anesthesiologists in the preparation and administration of anesthesia for surgical procedures, ensuring timely and accurate delivery.
• Collaborated with surgical team members to optimize patient care and maintain a sterile environment in the operating room.
• Reduced complications by conducting thorough preoperative assessments and obtaining medical histories from patients.
